Photos Past: Illinois Central, South of Chicago

This is my favorite photograph depicting the Illinois Central Railroad.  I first saw this image on the cover of an I.C. annual report that was given me when I was a kid.  It’s since been featured in quite of a bit of the company’s literature.

The scene is somewhere south of Chicago, and one of their handsome chocolate and orange stream-liners is featured at left, along with two coal trains at right, with steam power no less!

  1. Always liked that Chocolate Paint scheme so much, years ago at OKC. Train Show could not find KCS pass. cars so bought a pair of I H C C-liners in I. C. colors.
    Bet that was fun reading!!
Later repainted one but still have the “dummy” unit to run at times.
Amazing how many class I railroads are gone in my life time.
From getting into trouble as young a 7yrs, old playing in the “Coal bin” in the R.R. yard and hearing steamers passing behind our small house in a small town after dark.
Some time even hearing it’s whistle down the tracks!
