Cutting Off the Helper

A helper engine was taken on at Chillicothe for added power to tackle an eight mile grade on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad between Chillicothe, Illinois and Fort Madison, Iowa. Here the helper has been cut off at the crest and the train will proceed on unassisted. The #3286 is listed as a Baldwin built 2-8-2 “Mikado” manufactured in 1920.

  1. Even though this looks like a 2-6-2 in the rear.
Am thinking of building a dummy 0-6-0 as a pusher on my Bayou Crest Express.
Same power from drivers, so would not look too different if a heavy weight.
    Thanks Jack,

    • Hi Boudreaux –
I checked a Santa Fe roster for the #3286. She’s listed as a Baldwin built 2-8-2 manufactured in 1920.
Your 0-6-0 surely can be used as a pusher at slow speeds, and for the shorter trains.
