{"id":427,"date":"2014-08-11T20:40:03","date_gmt":"2014-08-12T01:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/?p=427"},"modified":"2019-01-31T12:02:22","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T18:02:22","slug":"do-you-smell-that","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/2014\/08\/11\/do-you-smell-that\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Smell That?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was a brief discussion recently over on the <em>Model Railroad Hobbyist<\/em> forum about scents and their use on model railroads <a title=\"DCC and scent? on Model Railroad Hobbyist forum\" href=\"https:\/\/model-railroad-hobbyist.com\/node\/18843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(read the discussion here)<\/a>.\u00a0 The topic roamed around a bit, with discussion ranging from what people had experienced, some product that had been available, and some ideas about what could be done today.<\/p>\n<p>One person mentioned the defunct line of scents that was marketed under the name of <em>Olfactory Airs<\/em>, which I remembered.\u00a0 There were a dozen or so different scents offered in the form of bottles of oil.\u00a0 I remember a couple of the scents: creosote, diesel oil, pine trees, and coal smoke.\u00a0 You were supposed to put a few drops onto something like a cotton ball or similar, then stick it some place on the layout for it to release its aroma to the surroundings.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it never lived up to its promise in my opinion.\u00a0 The odors didn&#8217;t linger very long and it was hard to relate the odors to what they were supposed to be.\u00a0 Apparently others thought so too, as the company eventually disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>But I think the idea was really cool.\u00a0 Imagine running a train down the mainline on a hot summer day and detecting a faint odor of creosote as you&#8217;re moving down the line.\u00a0 Or the smells of steam, hot oil and coal smoke down by the roundhouse?\u00a0 Maybe the aroma of a pine forest by the logging operation, or even the smell of flowers when passing a meadow.\u00a0 It can go on and on.\u00a0 And no, I&#8217;m NOT interested in introducing the aromas of a stock yard or a fish processing plant.<\/p>\n<p>As hobbyists, we&#8217;re really caught up in the <em>sounds<\/em> of locomotives now, and I even plan to experiment with stationary sounds in a few strategic locations some day in the future (gotta get some trains running first!).\u00a0 But I suspect that smells are something that not many of us have experienced on a model railroad.\u00a0 One of the posters on the forum (using the handle of Professor Klyzlr) even offered a few ideas as to how the concept might be implemented.\u00a0 Maybe I&#8217;ll have to bookmark that column for later reference.<\/p>\n<p><em>-Jack<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was a brief discussion recently over on the Model Railroad Hobbyist forum about scents and their use on model railroads (read the discussion here).\u00a0 The topic roamed around a bit, with discussion ranging from what people had experienced, some &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/2014\/08\/11\/do-you-smell-that\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-427","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/427","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=427"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/427\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1550,"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/427\/revisions\/1550"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=427"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=427"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=427"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
