{"id":407,"date":"2014-07-21T18:51:59","date_gmt":"2014-07-21T23:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/?p=407"},"modified":"2019-01-31T12:19:07","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T18:19:07","slug":"the-2nd-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/2014\/07\/21\/the-2nd-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"The 2nd Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I had intended to celebrate the second anniversary of the Louisiana Central&#8217;s construction, but work and other things simply got in the way.\u00a0 This past weekend I spent some quiet time in the layout room and pondered what had happened over the past year.\u00a0 A year ago I wrote a piece after pondering the same thing.\u00a0 At the end I had stated a goal of completing the L.C. mainline by the end of the second year.\u00a0 I suppose I was feeling overly optimistic that day, or perhaps my inexperience with building a large layout clouded my sensibilities.\u00a0 Not only was that goal not met, it wasn&#8217;t even close!<\/p>\n<p>To be truthful, I lost a couple months where I just couldn&#8217;t do any meaningful work on the layout due to some health issues.\u00a0 That was followed by several more months of light duty in which some progress was made, but nothing to get excited about.\u00a0 But even putting that aside, there simply was no way to get that far along in a single year with me only working on the layout during weekends.\u00a0 After reading several model railroad forums, <em>and<\/em> seeing what other friends were doing, it finally helped open my eyes to what realistically can be done in a year&#8217;s time.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m doing much better now, and for the past three or four months, I&#8217;ve made good progress on the layout.\u00a0 I also recently reduced my hours at work (semi-retirement) so have an extra day each week to put some time in on construction.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been mixing tasks during this time trying to get everything current, and also trying to avoid getting bored or overwhelmed with a single job.<\/p>\n<p>The layout has five major benchwork areas: three sections along walls, and two peninsulas.\u00a0 The basic L-girder benchwork for all was completed last year.\u00a0 What is happening now is everything above the L-girders: joists, risers, sub-roadbed and track.\u00a0 Benchwork has been completed along two of the walls and on one of the peninsulas.\u00a0 This past weekend marked the construction start of the fourth section.\u00a0 My friend Wayne came over and we started cutting out and placing the joists on the section of benchwork along the longest wall of the building (34&#8242;-6&#8243;).\u00a0 While I hesitate to make predictions now based on my result from last year, I&#8217;m confident that these last two areas will have benchwork completed by late winter or perhaps the early spring.\u00a0 Trackwork has lagged behind more than I&#8217;d like, so I want to put more emphasis on getting the track installed as well.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a pic showing the recently completed work on Saturday and Sunday.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Benchwork-Alcove_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-406\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Benchwork-Alcove_01.jpg\" alt=\"Benwork in the Alcove\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Benchwork-Alcove_01.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Benchwork-Alcove_01-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lacentralrr.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Benchwork-Alcove_01-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>As always, comments are welcome&#8230;.drop a line!<\/p>\n<p><em>-Jack<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I had intended to celebrate the second anniversary of the Louisiana Central&#8217;s construction, but work and other things simply got in the way.\u00a0 This past weekend I spent some quiet time in the layout room and pondered what &hellip;
